About Me
Growing up in Monroe County, Alabama, there was no shortage of local turkey hunting hot spots. After hearing that first daylight gobble, I was hooked. I started turkey hunting at the ripe old age of 10, while tagging along with my dad.
Almost immediately, I dove head first into the world of turkey hunting. I studied everything I could get my hands on, went to local turkey calling competitions, visited with all the local old timers trying to learn both new and lost techniques for hunting and calling. I was like an addict searching for his next hit, I did absolutely everything I could think of.
By age 12, I was regularly calling and taking birds on my own. My love for chasing longbeards along the Alabama River near our home far surpassed my love for the typical things young boys chased: sports, dating, after school activities, and even school itself at times (which, admittedly, got me into trouble more than a few times). It was well worth it, though, just to hear that first day-breaking sound of a gobbling longbeard.
I was fortunate to live in the country and hunt turkeys in the woods right from my backyard. Most days, I couldn’t wait to get home and grab my vest, calls, and shotgun just to get a few hours of turkey hunting in every evening after school.
At 16, my family moved to north-central Louisiana. To say I was in major culture shock would be an understatement — I was now firmly in duck hunting country (ever heard of Duck Commander?), and had very few toms to hunt.
Even though north Louisiana isn’t known for turkey hunting, my love (obsession, really) was great enough that I continued to chase longbeards every spring. I became quite successful at harvesting birds in really difficult hunting areas, where birds have been over-called and over-hunted.
Shortly after finishing high school, I started working construction and traveling all over the U.S. I found myself in different areas every spring and quickly realized that with numerous public hunting opportunities available, I could easily extend my turkey season and bag limits, plus expand the subspecies of turkeys I harvested. It wasn’t long before I became fascinated with all the different characteristics and habits of different wild turkey subspecies (the eastern is, and has always been, my favorite).
After decades of chasing longbeards all over the Lower 48 and reaching triple-digit numbers in successfully hunted and called-in birds, I turned my focus on guiding and helping others be more successful in their pursuit of wild turkeys. In 2022, at the age of 39, I had the great honor of helping my 14-year-old son harvest his first out-of-state gobbler. My approach is adapting both new and old-school turkey hunting techniques and passing down my genuine passion of chasing longbeards.
That brings us to today, and you. I’ve dedicated this site to helping other hunters, whether you’re brand new — a Jake, if you will — or a multi-decade veteran like myself. My goal and passion is to help you learn those same tricks, tips, and general info about turkey hunting (specifically, doing it across multiple state lines) that took me 30 years to learn. I hope you’ll stay awhile, look around, and that you pick something up that helps you be more successful on your next hunt.
